Support Roadless Areas!

Early next week the House of Representatives will take a critical vote on the Roadless Area Conservation Rule, the landmark forest conservation policy that protects the last 58.5 million acres of our undeveloped national forests from most commercial logging and road building.

Sample Letter for Campaign

Subject: Support Roadless Area Protections

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

Corporate special interests are once again threatening America's national forests. The timber industry -- in concert with the Bush administration -- is plotting to log some of our last wild national forests, turning a deaf ear to millions of Americans, who want our public lands protected.

That's why I'm asking you to show your support for the Roadless Area Conservation Rule, when the roadless amendment comes up for a vote as part of the Interior Appropriations bill.

The roadless rule is overwhelmingly supported by the American people. It is the product of the largest federal rulemaking process in history, with more than 1.6 million comments submitted in support of the forest protections that it provides. It also represents a balanced forest conservation policy that protects the last 30% of our last wild national forests from most commercial logging and road building -- activities that already are allowed in more than one-half of national forest lands.

This vote could not come at a more critical time. Scores of timber sales are moving forward in some of our national forests' most pristine areas. These include 30 sales in Alaska's Tongass National Forest, which are prohibited by the rule. The Bush administration also has given the "go-ahead" to logging or road building in some of the most magnificent areas of national forests in California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, and Illinois.

Please stand up to the corporate special interests, stand with the American people, and stand tall for America's national forests. Please vote to support the Roadless Area Conservation amendment to the Interior Appropriations Bill and protect our national forests now. Because once they're gone. . . they're gone forever.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Background Information

This vote could not come at a more critical time. Scores of timber sales are moving forward in some of our national forests' most pristine areas, including Alaska Tongass National Forest, the nation's largest old-growth forest. The Bush administration also has given the "go-ahead" to logging or road building in some of the most magnificent areas of national forests in California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, and Illinois. They want to log some of our last wild national forests, turning a deaf ear to millions, like you and me, who want our public lands protected.

Only Congress can stop them!

That's why I'm asking you to take action now.

Please take a moment to contact your Member of Congress today and ask them to protect our national forests by supporting the Roadless Area Conservation Rule. Tell them that this is their chance to stand up to the corporate special interests, stand with the American people, and stand tall for our forests.

Because once they're gone. . . they're gone forever.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Jane Danowitz, Director Heritage Forests Campaign

P.S. In addition to sending a letter, please also CALL your Member of Congress and voice your support for the Roadless Area Conservation Amendment. The telephone number of the Congressional switchboard is 202 224-3121.
