The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) voted yesterday to purchase 250 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses over the next two years and to build a refueling facility at WMATA's Four-Mile Run facility in Arlington, VA. Thanks to 461 email messages that area activists sent to Metro Board Chair Christopher Zimmerman, the region will have a total of 414 clean buses after the purchases are complete, giving it one of the largest CNG fleets in the country. In addition, WMATA will be retrofitting existing diesel buses with particle traps and running them on low sulfur diesel fuel (30 PPM). These new developments will play a major role in cleaning up the air in the Washington D.C. region.
Many thanks to all of you who wrote to Metro Board Chair Chris Zimmerman and attended the rally yesterday to express your support for this important issue. Your contribution made a big difference!
