Success! Preliminary Plans for Amazon Pipeline Cracked!

Action Network from Environmental Defense.
Finding the ways that work.
***************************
On November 1, Environmental Defense sent an action alert
announcing
Brazil's intention to build the proposed Urucu-Porto Velho gas
pipeline in the Amazon. This pipeline would destroy one of the best-
preserved sections of the Amazon rainforest and would devastate a
completely isolated, uncontacted indigenous group.
Nearly 1,900 of you took action, sending emails the President of the
Environmental Institute, IBAMA, in Brazil demanding that they delay
public hearings on the Environmental Impact Analysis for the
destructive pipeline.
SUCCESS!!! Thanks to pressure from you, other activists and
environmental organizations, the public hearings have been
cancelled. The public hearings were intended to rubber stamp the
project, without allowing environmentalists and affected communities
time to analyze and critique the Environmental Impact Assessment.
Steve Schwartzman, Environmental Defense's expert working to
protect
the Amazon and its peoples, reports that the cancellation of the
these public hearings allows local and national groups to not only
analyze the Environmental Impact Analysis of the pipeline project,
but to inform the public about potential problems, and assess viable
alternatives to the pipeline. We at Environmental Defense thank you
for your efforts and encourage you to keep up the good work!
