Tell Newmont Mining to Clean Up After Itself

Activists At Work! Results Of Your Efforts:

Many thanks for responding to the May 1st alert telling "Newmont Mining to Clean Up After Itself."

You were one of thousands around the globe who asked Newmont to clean up its Minahasa Raya gold mine in Indonesia, and compensate the nearby villagers for the damage caused by dumping mine waste in Buyat Bay. Your letters were not just received by Newmont, but also delivered to the Indonesian government by JATAM, an Indonesian environmental group.

As you are probably aware, those who sent letters to Newmont received an email from Doug Hock, the company's Director of Public Affairs and Communications. Newmont continues to deny that its operation has harmed community and environmental health. Representatives of the Buyat Bay community have responded to Newmont's letter. Below is an excerpt (translated from Bahasa Indonesia):

"In Buyat, people are facing a health crisis with skin diseases and tumors on the entire body...Unfortunately, PT NMR [Newmont Minahasa Raya] has yet to give any explanation about what may have caused the sickness, nor has it provided free health care to us, the residents of Buyat Bay. Our local history record says that the territory has never been hit by such diseases, nor have fish either, until after Newmont threw tailings.  We urge PT NMR to stop telling lies to Buyat people and the world's citizens with false remarks."
