The short explanation of this alert was:
Please tell the World Bank to adopt and implement the recommendations of its own Extractive Industries Review! Tell the World Bank to stop funding mining projects that pollute the environment and harm local communities!
The World Bank is a key funder of mining projects in developing countries. And it often helps set performance standards for the mining industry in these countries.
The Bank will meet in late April to mark its 60th Anniversary. One of the main issues that will be raised is the report and recommendations of the Bank’s Extractive Industries Review (EIR). After a two year multi-stakeholder process, the EIR recently recommended that the Bank refrain from financing any mining project that fails to meet a set of basic criteria, including those called for by the No Dirty Gold campaign. It recommends, among other things, that the Bank should not fund mining operations that:
- Dump mine waste into rivers and oceans
- Threaten protected areas
- Have not secured the free, prior and informed consent of affected communities
- Do not guarantee sufficient funds to cover closure and clean-up cost
In the next few months, the World Bank will decide how far they are willing to go to adopt these recommendations. Without input and pressure, the Bank’s own track record has shown that they often go for the lowest common denominator.
TAKE ACTION! Please send/amend the letter below to tell the World Bank to adopt the recommendations of its own Extractive Industries Review report.
