Tell Your Representatives: Co-Sponsor the Global Conservation Act

More than 80,000 acres of rain forest are destroyed every day. Thirty percent of the world's coral reefs are already lost. As these ecosystems disappear, so does the wildlife that calls them home. Tiger populations are hanging on by a thread. Poachers kill hundreds of great apes each year. Every sea turtle species is endangered or threatened by extinction. Scientists estimate that one-half to two-thirds of the world's species could be driven to the brink of extinction by the end of this century.

There's a lot we can do to halt the destruction of nature around the globe. U.S. leadership and increased financial resources from the United States and other developed nations can dramatically expand successful conservation programs throughout the developing world.

The last remnants of the world's natural areas are rapidly disappearing.  Critical natural systems such as forests, wetlands and grasslands around the globe have been reduced by as much as one-half their original extent. Thirty percent of the world's coral reefs and mangroves are already lost.  And the destruction is accelerating.  As these areas disappear, the wildlife and the people who live there suffer.   Scientists estimate that one-half to two-thirds of the world's species could be driven to the brink of extinction by the end of this century.

The world's developing nations have the highest rates of ecosystem destruction and species loss.  And these nations sorely lack the financial resources to protect them.  The international community needs to help, but there's neither a viable strategy to do so nor the levels of financial assistance necessary to stop the escalating destruction.

It's time for the United States to lead the rest of the world in addressing this crisis.

I urge you to be an original co-sponsor of the Global Conservation Act.  The bill, which Congressman Russ Carnahan is expected to introduce shortly, calls on the U.S. government to develop an international strategy capable of stemming the destruction.  The Act asks the United States to work with our allies to help implement and fund this strategy.  Several U.S. agencies currently provide some international conservation assistance, but the various efforts are not coordinated and lack clear or measurable benchmarks of success.  The Global Conservation Act requires a comprehensive U.S. strategy, with a plan for how all of the country's government agencies engaged in conservation abroad can achieve meaningful and measurable results.

Conserving natural areas across the globe benefits more than the environment.  Natural ecosystems underpin critical global industries generating billions of dollars a year through forestry, tourism, fishing and agriculture.  Natural areas also provide the original source material for more than a third of prescription drugs, including such lifesaving medications as Vincristine and Vinblastine, used to treat leukemia and Hodgkin's disease.  Protecting ecosystems also helps prevent scarcities of water, arable land and food that the U.S. National Intelligence Council says will increasingly cause international conflict this century.
