The short explanation of this alert was:

Earlier this month, Ameren, one of Illinois' largest utilities, announced a new mercury and clean air agreement with the Illinois EPA.  The Chicago Tribune called the agreement "a victory for clean air."  The Daily Herald, St. Louis Post Dispatch and the Champaign News Gazette also praised the deal.

It's time for Midwest Generation, Illinois' largest coal plant owner, to join them in supporting strong reductions in mercury pollution that would protect our children's health and environment.

Mercury pollution is a serious threat to our children and the environment.  Researchers estimate that 6-10% of American women of childbearing age have blood mercury levels that pose serious risks for fetal brain development.  That translates to 230,000 to 410,000 babies born annually with increased risk for learning disabilities and other neurological problems.

Please send a letter today to coal plant owners asking them to support strong mercury pollution protections.
