Campaign Unavailable We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Environmental Advocates of New York. The short explanation of this alert was: The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has for years overseen the operation of solid waste facilities with its own, independent, environmental monitors – paid for by the polluters. A draft Department policy change would reduce the number of facilities under this kind of scrutiny and allow the polluters to hire their own private firms to perform this watchdog function. We need to tell DEC to withdraw the draft policy change. If a new policy is to be drawn, it needs to be at least as protective of health and the environment as the one it replaces. Any such change should be subjected to a complete pubic review with community meetings explaining the changes and hearings for taking testimony.
