The short explanation of this alert was:
Over the last several years, the City of Wilmington and New Hanover County have made it into the national spotlight for excessive raw sewage spills into precious surface waters. The majority of the spills are associated with one particular section of the system known as the Northeast Interceptor (NEI). The City of Wilmington has acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and plans on making repairs to the system over the next 2-3 years. The local community, however, is concerned about the timeliness of the City's plan and fears that the local ecosystem will not be able to handle any further abuse.
The Cape Fear Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation needs your support to require the City of Wilmington to enter into a Special Order of Consent with the State, establishing an acceptable timetable and structured enforcement program to assist the City in achieving compliance with its NPDES permit and protecting our precious coastal waters.
