Stop St. Lawrence Cement |
|
Campaign Unavailable We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Environmental Advocates of New York. The short explanation of this alert was: Cancer-causing dust. Toxic waste. Towering smoke stacks spewing pollution over hundreds of miles. This is what St. Lawrence Cement wants to bring into the heart of the historic Hudson Valley, unless Governor Pataki stops them. The foreign-owned company is proposing to build an 1,800-acre industrial cement and mining complex that would emit 20 million pounds of hazardous pollutants into our air every year. Doctors agree it would make children's asthma worse and increase cancer rates and heart attacks. Smokestacks, a pit mine, a fleet of diesel trucks, and a pollution plume stretching for miles would also ruin the scenic beauty essential to our region's economic future. And for all this, the plant proposed for Columbia County would produce only ONE new permanent job. ACT NOW: Tell Governor Pataki that you're counting on him to stop the plant.
