The Taku River watershed. Credit: Paul Morrison/ Rivers Without Borders |
The Canadian government is currently considering approval of a mine and road project that would devastate the pristine Taku River watershed -- shared by British Columbia and Alaska. The Taku watershed is twice the size of Yellowstone National Park, encompassing about 4.5 million acres of virtually roadless, pristine wilderness.
The Tulsequah Chief mine and road proposal includes the construction of a 100 mile long road into this old growth watershed. Independent biologists, as well as government scientists, have recommended against approval of the road as it poses a grave threat to economically important wild salmon populations and would likely cause the extinction of an already threatened caribou herd. Also, the road would open the region to further heavy industrial development without any land use plan or restrictions on new developments.
TAKE ACTION! Public input is one of the key factors that will determine whether this project is ultimately approved, modified, or rejected.
