The short explanation of this alert was:
AB 2058 is a progressive anti-litter measure targeted at reducing the amount of plastic debris polluting our environment, which is increasingly killing marine life and threatening the overall health of our ocean ecosystems. The bill is currently being considered by the California Legislature that would ultimately require large grocery stores and pharmacies to charge a 25 cent fee on plastic single-use grocery bags. The money from the fee would be used by the stores to implement specified plastic carryout bag recycling, plastic carryout bag cleanup, and plastic carryout bag waste reduction programs
Plastic bag manufacturers and the American Chemistry Council have millions of dollars to spend on lobbyists and attorneys to prevent this legislation and similar local measures from going through. They make environmentalists out to be the bad guys who distort the facts while in the meantime they have launched a media campaign to twist the truth and misinform the public about the environmental and societal impacts of reducing plastic bag usage.
Over the past several months, Surfrider has focused on advancing this progressive piece of statewide legislation as part of our Rise Above Plastics program because, if passed, the result will be a cleaner and healthier marine environment as well as the promotion of a more environmentally-conscious way of acting and thinking. We need YOUR support in order for this important bill to become law in California. AB 2058 is expected to be heard soon on the senate floor. Please fill out the form below to express your support for AB 2058.
