Campaign Unavailable We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Keep Antibiotics Working. The short explanation of this alert was: Following a landmark hearing on Capitol Hill last week, Congress stands poised to address the overuse of antibiotics in confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs), a practice which contributes to the growing human health crisis of antibiotic resistance. An estimated 70 percent of all antibiotics used in the United States are regularly added to the feed of livestock and poultry that are not sick. Bacteria that are constantly exposed to antibiotics develop antibiotic resistance. This means that when humans get sick from resistant bacteria, the antibiotics prescribed by doctors don’t work. Your representative is a member of the subcommittee currently deciding whether the Animal Drug User Fee Act—an industry-sponsored bill that accelerates the approval of new animal drugs—should include provisions to curtail overuse of antibiotics for animals and collect public health data. During last week’s hearing, committee members wanting to act faced heavy opposition from the animal drug industry. Please call your representative TODAY and ask that provisions to keep antibiotics working be included in the Animal Drug User Fee Act! Click here to look up your Representative's phone number.
