We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit The Ocean Conservancy.

The short explanation of this alert was:

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has announced its plans not to require the use of fishing gear proven to protect threatened and endangered sea turtles. Instead the agency will allow the use of gear that may well continue the unnecessary capture, injury and death of these animals.

NMFS is planning to publish the final rule within the next two weeks. Please respond to this alert immediately and urge the head of NMFS, Director William Hogarth, Ph.D., to not change course, but to require the use of the fishing gear proven to be more protective of sea turtles.
