GSR mines have spilled cyanide into rivers twice in the past twelve months. Credit: Ghana News Agency |
Golden Star Resources, a US-Canadian mining company, owns two gold mines that are wreaking havoc on local communities in western Ghana. Cyanide spills have contaminated several rivers and streams and sickened villagers. Blasting from the mines occurs close enough to settlements to crack buildings and television sets. And when residents held a peaceful rally in June to voice their concerns, security forces opened fire and injured seven people, including a 12-year old boy.
Local communities allege that Golden Star Resources has for years largely ignored community concerns about access to clean drinking water, environmental and health impacts, noise and blasting, and the growing amount of mine waste. Now, impacted communities have united to demand that Golden Star Resources stop the irresponsible mining that is destroying their rivers and towns and address community concerns. They are also calling upon the Ghanaian government to independently investigate the human rights abuses, including the shooting of peaceful demonstrators.
Please take action. Tell Golden Star Resources and the government of Ghana to respect the rights of local communities.
