The short explanation of this alert was:
Please help us urge Governor Kulongoski to oppose the approval of casino development in the Gorge--there isn't much time left!

Governor Ted Kulongoski is under tremendous pressure from casino advocates and the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs to approve Oregon's first off-reservation casino - at a site within the Columbia River Gorge. (All existing casinos in Oregon, including Chinook Winds and Spirit Mountain, are located on reservation land).

Please contact Governor Kulongoski today. Urge him to protect the Columbia River Gorge and oppose a casino in Cascade Locks. Urge him to maintain the State's current policy of allowing casinos only on Indian reservations.

What a casino would mean to the Gorge

A 500,000-square-foot casino is estimated by casino advocates to draw 3 million visitors per year, resulting in thousands of additional motor vehicles every day, increasing air pollution in the Gorge. This would be equivalent to building a Six Flags Magic Mountain Amusement Park in the heart of the Columbia Gorge.

This level of development would drastically increase traffic, congestion and air pollution. At present, the U.S. Forest Service has determined that air pollution is a sigificant problem in the Gorge. Visibility impairment is currently occurring more than 90% of the time in the scenic Columbia Gorge due to already existing air pollution.

Further, locating a large casino and resort in Cascade Locks would lead to an explosion of unplanned growth in this small community, increasing pressure on the urban growth boundaries that protect surrounding scenic area lands.

Please contact Governor Kulongoski today and voice your strong opposition to the development of a casino anywhere in the Columbia Gorge!
