It is important that we all do our part to protect the unique natural resources of Northern Wisconsin.

Although we all care about the forests, we do so for a number of different reasons. Some of us treasure the outdoor activities that healthy forests make possible, such as hunting, biking, hiking, skiing, and fishing in clean rivers and lakes. Others are proud environmentalists who are seriously concerned that if our forests are not preserved we may fundamentally change our ecosystems and cause major losses in biodiversity.

As a proud environmentalist, I have a deep personal interest in ensuring that our unique natural resources are managed responsibly. I am concerned that the timber sales proposed by the US Forest Service for the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest threaten the forests, trout streams, and lakes that make Wisconsin's Northwoods such a great place to live and visit.  A Federal District Court judge in the Eastern District of Wisconsin recently recognized that the Forest Service has repeatedly violated the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) by failing to consider the cumulative effects of their proposed timber sales on threatened and endangered species such as pine marten, Northern Goshawk, and Red-Shouldered Hawk.  If logging in the Northwoods continues at the current rate, many of the plants and animals that inhabit our forest ecosystems may experience population decline or extinction.  Across the globe, more and more species are becoming threatened or extinct and only by being responsible stewards of our forests can we ensure that this region does not further such a tragic pattern.  It is critical that the US Forest Service manages the forests of our region in a more balanced way, in order to protect biodiversity and keep our rivers and lakes clean for future generations.
 
I urge you to do all in your power to ensure that the Forest Service complies with NEPA and manages the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in a sustainable way by decreasing the amount and frequency of logging in key areas for clean water and sensitive species.  With your help, we can preserve the biodiversity of Northern Wisconsin and make sure that the forests that make the Northwoods so special are healthy for years to come.
