Gary Works, operated by U.S. Steel Corp, located about 15 miles southwest of Chicago in Gary, Indiana, is one of the region’s largest sources of pollution. The facility dumped more than 1.7 million pounds of pollution in Lake Michigan in 2005 including toxic chemicals like mercury, cyanide, and ammonia among others. Without your help, they may be able to dump even more pollution into our Great Lakes.
The Great Lakes is the largest fresh water body of water on the planet with a vibrant ecosystem. It provides clean, safe drinking water for 28 million people spanning eight states and two Canadian provinces and offers vast recreational opportunities. We cannot continue to ignore the laws crafted to protect one of our most precious natural resources.
Restricting the amount of pollution released into Lake Michigan is not just a good environmental practice--it's the law.
U.S. Steel Corp. must be held to the same standard as BP and other industrial facilities that operate in the Great Lakes and near waterways. Lake Michigan does not need any more pollution.
