The short explanation of this alert was:
In the Southwest, livestock grazing is the most widespread cause of species endangerment. In dry regions, grazing wreaks catastrophic destruction on rivers, deserts, grasslands and forests over large areas--at very low productivity and with little economic justification. Each year taxpayers subsidize approximately $100 million to support grazing on public lands, while only about 2% of the nation s livestock and 2% of the nation s livestock forage are produced on these lands. More information. . .

The desert's fragile ecosystems will take centuries to recover from the damage that's already been done. Now further threat awaits in the guise of streamlining the process for management of our public lands.

The Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management has recently notified the public of their proposed rule for revisions to grazing regulations on public lands and the release of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for these revisions. These destructive proposed changes would decrease the opportunity for public input and oversight into public lands grazing policy on BLM lands. Further, they would give preferential treatment to cattle operations over all other public land uses, allow ranchers co-ownership of so-called improvements on public lands, and avoid or delay crucial actions to protect wildlife and their habitat.

Please take a moment to send your comments, due March 2, 2004. Consider personalizing them by mentioning an example of what rangeland abuses have done to species of wildlife in your area, or other concerns or examples you may have. Your voice is needed to inform the BLM that the public wants input in actions that impact our public lands and that cattle grazing should not have preference over all other public lands uses.
