The Pew Environment Group and our online advocates have worked hard to protect the environment and ocean life. Together we secured a law requiring federal fisheries managers to end overfishing and rebuild depleted fish populations. That law, the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, is working. Valuable fish populations are recovering around the country and damaged marine ecosystems are repairing.

Rebuilding fish populations and ocean ecosystems will pay dividends over time, but in the short term, coastal communities and fishermen need support as they face already difficult economic times from the fishing quota reductions necessary to put our ocean fish on the road to recovery. The Coastal Jobs Creation Act (CJCA) (HR 4914) will help with this transition by employing fishermen and others in:

Cooperative research programs to employ fishermen and their vessels to help in the collection of fisheries data and testing new gear and fishing techniques for better fisheries management.
Clean up programs to remove marine debris and derelict fishing gear from coastal waters.
Working waterfront renovation projects to improve the environmental performance of coastal fishing infrastructure.
Programs to better monitor our fisheries.

This bill will help ensure the future of fish and fishing in America's oceans. Please email your Senators and Representative(s) and ask them to cosponsor the Coastal Jobs Creation Act (HR 4914) and to reject any shortsighted proposals to weaken existing law.

Please cosponsor the Coastal Jobs Creation Act of 2010 (CJCA) (HR 4914).  Congress has made a priority of saving and creating jobs in this hard-hit economy.  The CJCA would create jobs for fishermen and coastal communities as fish populations rebuild and ocean ecosystems recover from decades of overfishing.

The Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA) is working.  The conservation of America's valuable ocean fish populations is a great investment in our environment and our coastal economy.  As fish populations rebound, damaged marine ecosystems are being repaired creating jobs, supporting coastal economies, enhancing recreational fishing opportunities and bringing back fresh, local seafood.

As you hear about the real hardships some fishermen face, please reject short-sighted proposals to delay or weaken conservation deadlines.  The best solution is to allow the MSA to continue to work and for you to cosponsor the CJCA (HR 4914) and provide funding for fishermen and coastal communities as ocean fish continue to rebound.
