As officials in Washington increasingly shrink from the task of protecting the environment, states are taking the lead in passing new laws requiring the auto industry to clean up its act. In California, a new law passed last summer requires auto companies to begin reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the vehicles they sell. And Maine now requires auto companies to take responsibility for recovering toxic mercury components from their vehicles before they pollute that state's lakes, rivers and streams. However, automakers are fighting these new state laws, preferring to litigate rather than cleaning up their act.

Send an email to General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, and the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, all parties to lawsuits challenging these environmental laws.  Challenge automakers to stop litigating and focus on reducing the environmental impacts for which they are responsible.
