The short explanation of this alert was:

Healthy marine ecosystems are vital to sustaining life and are vastly important to those of us who spend time in, on or near the ocean. These ecosystems are under pressure from the constantly changing natural world and the additional human-imposed stresses, and protecting them is crucial now, perhaps more than ever.

The State of California is taking a leading role to protect ocean resources by establishing a statewide network of Marine Protected Areas along our coast. These Marine Protected Areas will protect marine life and habitats in the waters from the shoreline to three miles out. It is our duty, as owners of these waters and the resources in them, to protect these resources for ourselves and future generations.

Why your participation matters

Right now California is in the process of creating Marine Protected Areas along our coast from San Mateo County. The state will only choose a good plan if they hear that the public supports it. That’s why decision makers need to hear from you: that you care about protecting the ocean and that you support a 'balanced' proposal that provides strong protection while incorporating diverse stakeholder perspectives. Right now, the Fish and Game Commission is leaning toward the IPA Proposal, so they need to hear from you about which proposal provides the 'right' coverage for our communities.
