The short explanation of this alert was:

Stop Mercury Pollution in Illinois

On January 5, Governor Blagojevich announced his pledge to reduce mercury pollution from coal plants in Illinois by 90%.  This policy initiative will give Illinois one of the strongest controls in the nation against mercury pollution.

Mercury pollution is a serious threat to our children and the environment.  Researchers estimate that 6-10% of American women of childbearing age have blood mercury levels that pose serious risks for fetal brain development.  That translates to 230,000 to 410,000 babies born annually with increased risk for learning disabilities and other neurological problems.

Fish in Lake Michigan and ALL Illinois waterways are contaminated with mercury. The Illinois Department of Public Health has issued “fish advisories” warning everyone – particularly pregnant women, women of childbearing age and children -- to limit their consumption of fish from Illinois’ lakes, rivers and streams.
