The short explanation of this alert was:

Interior Secretary Gale Norton and Interior Solicitor William Myers are considering reinterpreting the one provision of the 1872 Mining Law that protects the public interest.  The millsite provision prevents the multinational mining industry from dumping its toxic mine waste on unlimited amounts of public lands.

And there is plenty of toxic mine waste to go around.  The hardrock mining industry is the nation's largest toxic polluter -- according to the Environmental Protection Agency, the mining industry releases almost half of the nation's toxic waste.

Please act now to send a letter to Secretary Norton and Solicitor Myers urging them not to cave in to the demands of the largest toxic polluter in the United States, the hardrock mining industry.
