The California American Water Company (Cal-Am) provides water to residents of the Monterey Peninsula. However, the Cal-Am’s current operations have taken a hefty toll on our environment and fellow water users, because the company is taking more water from the Carmel River and Seaside Groundwater Basin than it is legally allowed. In an effort to address this overpumping issue, Cal-Am has developed two water supply alternatives to provide the water needed to end overpumping of these important resources. A third water supply option is also on the table—The “Regional Plan”—to take into consideration regional water needs and broader community values while seeking to present a publicly-owned alternative.
