The short explanation of this alert was:

New York cannot meet our clean energy goals without updating the state’s net metering laws.

What’s net metering?
It’s the practice that lets consumers like you and me, as well as businesses and schools, get credit for the clean energy we produce. And it’s just one way that
New York
can reduce its dependence on polluting fossil fuels and our contributions to global warming.

Net metering is a simple way to give an incentive to homeowners, businesses, and farmers to install clean, renewable energy systems. It works like this: when a customer’s clean energy system (such as solar panels, wind turbines, or farm waste digesters) provides more energy than the customer needs, the meter spins backward.

The customer is then sending additional power back to the grid instead of consuming it. The result is a reduced—or in some cases eliminated—power bill, less demand for fossil-fueled power that dirties our environment and contributes to climate change, and less chance of blackouts because overall power demand is reduced.

And while net metering makes sense,
New York
’s net metering laws do not.

Click here to ask your state lawmakers in Albany to support clean energy and update New York’s net metering laws.

New York needs to expand our net metering policy to include all renewable energy systems and all types of customers up to 2 MW.
