Northwoods Activist Tools Outdoors person Letter to the Editor

It is important that we all do our part to protect the unique natural resources of Northern Wisconsin.

Although we all care about the forests, we do so for a number of different reasons.  Some of us treasure the outdoor activities that healthy forests make possible, such as hunting, biking, hiking, skiing, and fishing in clean rivers and lakes.  Others are proud environmentalists who are seriously concerned that if our forests are not preserved we may fundamentally change our ecosystems and cause major losses in biodiversity.  Others realize that logging is becoming less and less profitable while the tourist industry grows in the Northwoods and forests as they stand become valuable for new markets on carbon offsets, and that the economy of Northern Wisconsin may be better off down the road if we slow logging of the Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest (CNNF).

Talking Points

Like many residents of Northern Wisconsin, outdoor recreation is very important to me.  I am concerned that the timber sales proposed by the US Forest Service for the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest threaten to destroy the forests in which we love to bike, hike, ski and hunt and threaten the quality of the lakes and trout streams that make Northern Wisconsin a great place to live and visit. The US Forest Service has repeatedly violated environmental laws by failing to consider the cumulative effects of their proposed timber sales on threatened and endangered species.  They have proposed too much logging, too fast, and in too many of the wrong places. As the demand for wood products wanes and the tourism industry expands, it is critical that the US Forest Service manages the forests of our region in a more balanced way. I would like my children and grandchildren to be able to enjoy the same forests, lakes and streams that I treasure so much.

It is important that we contact our elected officials to urge the Forest Service to comply with NEPA and to manage the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest sustainably by decreasing the amount and frequency of logging in key areas for clean water and sensitive species. Together, we can make sure that the Northern Wisconsin is a beautiful place to fish, hunt, bike, hike and ski for future generations.
