Campaign Unavailable We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Inactive - Center for Biological Diversity - Biodiversity Activist. The short explanation of this alert was: On Wednesday, February 16, 2005, the same day that the Kyoto Protocol entered into force without the participation of the United States, the Center for Biological Diversity filed a formal petition with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service requesting that the polar bear be listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. Polar bears may become extinct by the end of this century due to global warming caused by human production of greenhouse gases because their Arctic sea-ice habitat is literally melting away as the climate warms. The United States currently produces fully 24% of the world's greenhouse gases, and the Government Accounting Office projects that United States greenhouse gas emissions will grow by 43.5% through the year 2025. Current United States policy will allow our emissions to continue to grow rapidly. It is not too late to slow global warming and protect polar bears from extinction. But we must act now. Please use the link below to send a letter to your Congressional representatives urging them to adopt policy changes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Photo: Born of the North Wind ©Thomas D.
