Campaign Unavailable We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Sierra Club New Jersey Chapter. The short explanation of this alert was: The Delaware Bay shoreline is a crucial migratory stop for the red knot, a bird that feeds on excess horseshoe crab eggs before continuing its migration to the Arctic Circle. Due to overharvesting of horseshoe crabs for bait, the crab numbers have dwindled, and, along with it, the endangered red knot population has declined precipitously. A moratorium on horseshoe crab harvesting has helped bring their numbers back up. Unfortunately, the New Jersey Marine Fisheries Council recently vetoed the Department of Environmental Protection's horseshoe crab harvest moratorium regulations. Legislators have responded by introducing A2260/S1331, a bill that bans the harvest of horseshoe crabs in New Jersey. This action will help ensure the continued survival of endangered red knots and other shorebirds that depend on horseshoe crab eggs for food.
Please contact your legislators and let them know that you want them to save endangered shorebirds. Ask them to cosponsor A2260/S1331 to ban the harvest of horseshoe crabs.
