We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Environmental Defense Action Network.

The short explanation of this alert was:

Several environmental factors can protect coastal communities from hurricanes. One of the most important is wetlands. Healthy marshes and barrier islands act as storm buffers. Scientists tell us that every mile of wetlands and marshes that lie between the Gulf of Mexico and terra firma reduces hurricane-related storm surge by one foot.

As you've helped the relief effort in other ways, please take a moment to send an email to your officials in Congress, asking them to protect the Gulf Coast from future storms by supporting wetlands restoration. More about how wetlands can protect the Gulf Coast.
