The short explanation of this alert was:

Demand that California Resources Agency Provide a Realistic and Effective Solution to Maintain Critical Wildlife Habitat in the Salton Sea

The Salton Sea provides aquatic and shoreline habitat for fish and millions of resident and migrating birds representing more than 400 species. The rare and imperiled species that depend on the Salton Sea include the endangered Desert Pupfish, Brown Pelican, California Least Tern, Southwestern Willow Flycatcher, Least Bell's Vireo, and Yuma Clapper Rail.  The Salton Sea is a critical part of the Pacific Flyway used by millions of migrating birds each year.

To mitigate the impacts from the loss of water to the Salton Sea, the California Legislature mandated that a plan be developed to preserve and restore the important ecological functions of the Sea and to prevent the extreme degradation of air quality that could occur as the sea dries and vast quantities of dust and particulates are released into the air.

Unfortunately, none of the restoration alternatives provided in the recently released Salton Sea Ecosystem Program Draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Report satisfies the legal requirement that the restoration plan maximize wildlife habitat, air and water quality protection in a reasonable timeframe.

Please send a comment letter to the California Resources Agency urging them to combine the best features from the proposed alternatives into an alternative that would effectively restore habitat and protect local and regional air and water quality.
