Continental Minerals, a junior Canadian mining company and subsidiary of Hunter Dickinson Inc., is set to begin full-scale operations of a gold-copper-silver mine in central Tibet.

I join tens of thousands of people who are deeply concerned about Continental Minerals' mining operations at Shethongmon [Ch: Xietongmen] in central Tibet. I call on you to immediately cease all operations in Tibet, or face increased global opposition.

As you may be aware, after months of protest, Tibetans in eastern Tibet have successfully stopped mine operations at a sacred mountain. Facing arrest, imprisonment, and even death, Tibetans in Markham County peacefully blockaded the main road leading to Ser Ngol Lo Mountain. Even when Chinese officials deployed hundreds of armed security forces to stop the protest, the Tibetans vowed to stay to protect what is rightfully their land. As a result, they succeeded in permanently closing the mine operations at that site.

While this conflict ended without bloodshed, this is not the norm in Tibet. Just last month, Chinese troops opened fire on a group of Tibetans peacefully protesting a hydroelectric dam. Six Tibetan women were seriously wounded. Their current condition is unknown.

These protests are a clear indication of the Tibetan people's opposition to the exploitation of their natural resources without their free, prior, and informed consent - an international right that Tibetans have been denied under China's brutal military occupation.

Tibet is a conflict zone, with Chinese armed forces patrolling towns and monasteries, and foreign journalists are denied access to Tibetan areas. Mining in a conflict zone poses a clear financial risk to your shareholders and threatens the reputation of your company.

If you truly stand by your claim to be a responsible mining company, you will immediately withdraw from Tibet.
