The Chinese government is aggressively promoting mining in Tibet as a means to exploit Tibet's mineral wealth and further consolidate control over the region. Tibetans inside Tibet have risked arrest, imprisonment, and even death to speak out against mine operations on their land.
In early June, Tibetans in eastern Tibet had a breakthrough victory. After months of protest, they successfully forced a Chinese mining company to cease operations at a mountain considered sacred by the local community. Plans are also underway for a government-sponsored cleanup of toxic chemicals left over from previous mine operations in the area.
Unfortunately, mining in many other regions of Tibet continues unabated. Tibetans and their supporters are intensifying pressure on Canadian and British mining companies to immediately withdraw from Tibet.

Under Chinese occupation, Tibetans are denied their fundamental right to determine the use of their land and resources. In this context, Tibetans reap few, if any benefits, from the extraction of their own natural wealth, which is transferred out of Tibet for use in China's resource dependent provinces. Local communities are left to deal with the social, environmental, and ecological devastation associated with these projects.
The unprecedented protests that spread across the Tibetan plateau in 2008 were a clear expression of the Tibetan people's desire for human rights and freedom from Chinese rule. Chinese authorities responded to these protests with brute force, and Tibet remains under military lockdown today.
Given the level of repression in Tibet - where Tibetans are in no position to give their free, prior, and informed consent to mining operations - it is unconscionable for foreign companies to profit off Tibet's mineral wealth.
