We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Herring Alliance.

The short explanation of this alert was:

Every year massive schools of herring, at times numbering in the millions, migrate to spawn in New England waters. This abundance of fish is not only important to the regional economy but also plays a critical role in the marine ecosystem as food for whales, dolphins, seabirds, tuna, cod, striped bass and many other species of fish.

In a few short weeks (Nov 17-19), the New England Fishery Management Council (NEFMC) will make some crucial decisions on how we manage commercial fishing on this important forage species - including where to set the 2010 catch limit based on recent scientific information and advice.

We need your help. Before November 9th, please tell the Council to follow the best available science regarding the amount of herring that can be sustainably harvested from the ecosystem. And furthermore, please urge the Council to make the development of a comprehensive catch monitoring program an immediate priority for next year.
