Obama: Take Action on Tibet!

On September 14th, a high-level delegation sent by President Obama met with the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India to discuss the Obama administration's strategy on the Tibet issue and how it can assist in pushing for a resolution. Obama's first official visit to China will take place in November.

It was also announced that President Obama will only meet with the Dalai Lama after his China trip. In light of these developments, it is critical that the Obama administration hears strong messages of support for Tibet.

Please send the letter below to President Obama calling for action on Tibet. Your message will be copied to your Congressional Representatives.

I welcome the news of the visit of Valerie Jarrett and Under Secretary Maria Otero to Dharamsala, India to communicate your support for the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan people and your commitment to seeking a resolution for the Tibet issue.

I understand that your administration is looking to pursue a new strategy in engaging the Chinese government on Tibet and I would like to request more information about your plans.

Your trip to China and meeting with President Hu Jintao in November presents a strategic opportunity to make real progress towards a just and lasting resolution for the Tibetan people.

The American people have consistently demonstrated their overwhelming support for the Tibetan people in their struggle for human rights and freedom, and now you are uniquely positioned to translate this support into concrete action that could change the course of history for six million Tibetans and signal to the world that nonviolence can triumph over violence and oppression.

I understand you will meet with the Dalai Lama upon your return from China. In addition to being the leader of the Tibetan nation, the Dalai Lama is a tireless advocate for peace and one of the most respected global leaders of all time and I urge you to confirm a date for this meeting as soon as possible.
