June 3 - The Bush Administration announced last week that it was
buying back oil and gas drilling leases off the coast of
Florida's panhandle. The deal would effectively prevent Chevron
and other oil and gas companies from drilling in the Destin Dome
region of the Gulf of Mexico, just 25 miles off the coast of
Pensacola, Florida.

The announcement is a victory for the environment and the nearly
2,000 Florida residents who responded to a joint action alert
from Environmental Defense and Florida PIRG. You sent messages
to Governor Jeb Bush urging him to maintain his opposition to
the federal government's plans. Your voice was heard!

While additional areas in the Gulf of Mexico and around the
world still need protection from offshore drilling, this move
underscores that Florida residents do want their coastline and
ocean environment safeguarded from the pollution that comes with
unsafe oil and gas drilling.
