Join us on October 24 as we call out the inhumanity, immorality and illegality of ICE actions and detention centers.

Meet at the Hertford County Courthouse, which is directly across from the Rivers/Winton ICE detention center. We will gather there and spread out along the road by the detention center. Bring your signs! We will also livestream the event; please register for information on how to connect.

WE SAY NO to ICE tactics of violence, cruelty and dehumanization of immigrants who will be held at the Winton Processing Center in Hertford County, NC. Mass detentions are immoral, inhumane, and un-American. With one person dying weekly in ICE detention, let's raise our voices to stop all cruel ICE actions in our state!

The Winton ICE Processing Center was formerly a federal prison facility known as the Rivers Correctional Institute, owned by the private corporation, GEO Group. In 2016 the Office of Inspector General determined that private, for-profit prisons had more problems with contraband, assaults on inmates and staff, lockdowns and grievances than other Federal Bureau of Prisons facilities. This report found that of the 14 private prisons contracting with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Rivers was responsible for 1/3 of the sexual misconduct cases. Accordingly, their contract with the Bureau of Prisons was not renewed and they closed in 2021.

In 2026, most ICE detention centers are privately owned and/or privately managed, for corporate profit. They have far less oversight than Federal Prisons, but court cases and verified news media stories document unsanitary conditions, inadequate/inedible food, violence, mistreatment, and withholding of medical care. We expect that conditions in the Winton ICE Processing Center will be even worse than they were when it was Rivers Correctional Institution.

Our immigrant friends, neighbors, and family are being swept up illegally and held without due process or access to legal support. Most of the people detained in ICE centers have NO criminal record. No one should be subjected to these treatments that violate human dignity.

We share a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, are strictly prohibited at the event. Violence, threats or acts of aggression of any kind will not be tolerated.
