Approve the West Portal area improvements

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is proposing improvements to the area around West Portal Station that would:

  1. Increase safety for all people, especially children, families, seniors, and people with disabilities who walk, use mobility devices, take public transportation, or bike, but also people in cars.
  2. Improve the speed and reliability of SFMTA/Muni trains and buses (and the roughly 80,000 Muni riders who go through the area daily).
  3. Create community space outside the station for people to gather, connect, and relax while visiting the area, including to shop and dine at local businesses.
  4. Enhance the West Portal area by making it more welcoming, relaxing, and enjoyable for people who come to shop, dine, or visit local businesses on West Portal Avenue and Ulloa Street.
  5. Decrease car traffic, demand for parking, noise, and air pollution by helping more people shift trips away to walking, biking, and public transportation.

This is following, and partly in response to, the tragic and preventable car crash that resulted in a family of four being killed near West Portal Station. The area near West Portal Station has a school, a library, a park, a playground, multiple train and bus stops, doctor's offices, and a merchant corridor. The proposed improvements will make the area safer and more welcoming, relaxing, enjoyable, and vibrant for the people and businesses in the area.
