Expose the Bush Administration's Fuzzy Global Warming Solutions

On September 27 and 28, President Bush is hosting a meeting for the 15 most polluting countries to discuss global warming and continuing to promote his voluntary measures which just don't work.

The U.S. must get started reducing its global warming gas emissions, and the U.S. Congress has taken some steps in that direction. Both the House and the Senate have passed versions of an energy bill, but they need to finish the job and show the world that we are serious about doing our part about climate change. Along with an energy bill that includes fuel efficiency and renewable energy, Congress needs to put a mandatory limit on all the greenhouse gases we produce.

We need your help: Please urge your Members of Congress to lead the way on global warming by finishing the energy bill and supporting a carbon cap.

It helps if you put the message in your own words! If you have time, please edit the note below to reflect your own voice.

Subject: The World is Watching -- What Will the US do about Global Warming?

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

This week, President Bush will host a meeting of major polluting nations to continue to push voluntary measures to reduce global warming, even though it is proven such measures do not work. To prevent global warming, science says the world must reduce global warming pollution by more than half by the middle of the century, and developed countries such as the US must reduce their emissions by more than 80% for this goal to be met. It is going to take binding and enforceable limits nationally and worldwide to make that happen.

In the absence of executive leadership on climate, Congress and the States are taking the initiative to combat global warming. Congress is working on an energy package that should include a significant increase in fuel economy and a renewable energy standard that will help wean the U.S. off of foreign and unsustainable energy sources. A combination of these packages in a comprehensive energy bill will result in crucial reductions of global warming-causing emissions and help get us down the road toward combating global warming.

As the administration continues to duck its responsibilities, it is imperative that Congress acts with effective measures, such as the energy bill and a cap on greenhouse gases. In addition, the Congress must get the US reengaged in the international climate change talks and support strong, mandatory emissions reductions. These are measures that will demonstrate to the rest of the world that we are doing our part to combat climate change.

Sincerely,

Campaign Launched:
