The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering listing the monarch butterfly as critically threatened under the Endangered Species Act. The Service has determined that habitat protection, especially in parts of California, is necessary to protect the population from further decline. Habitat loss and pesticide use are major factors in the decline of the monarch butterfly over the last few decades.

North Carolina is in the eastern migratory path of the monarch. Supporting habitat protection in the west is critical for the overall population of this species.

Join us in supporting the listing of the monarch butterfly as a threatened species to ensure the strongest protections moving forward.

RE: Docket FWS-R3-ES-2024-0137

Dear Barbara Hosler,

Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the proposal to list the monarch butterfly as a Threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. Toxic Free NC, joined by the undersigned organizations and individuals, submits this comment in support of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposal to list the monarch.

Toxic Free NC has been working on pollinator protection and pesticide issues for decades. We track the impacts of pesticide use on critical species like the monarch butterfly year after year. North Carolina falls within the monarch’s spring migration pathway. Without the dedicated protection of habitat and reduced insecticide and herbicide use outlined in the protection plan, the monarch will remain critically threatened. There is a clear need for strong implementation of the outlined specific protections to support the population of the monarch across the nation.

We urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to finalize listing the monarch without delay. We urge the strongest protections possible to ensure the longevity of this iconic species.

Respectfully submitted,

Toxic Free North Carolina
