Subject: Stop the Crackdown in Tibet

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I join thousands of people around the world in calling on you to immediately end the military crackdown in Tibet and release all Tibetan political prisoners and detainees. Tibet must also be immediately opened to foreign media and international observers.

Last month, you hosted the world during the Beijing Olympics. Instead of using this opportunity to implement positive political change, including increased respect for human rights, you have used brute force to crush any sign of dissent inside Tibet and China. Draconian policies are being implemented in Tibet's monasteries and the country remains under military lockdown.

In the lead up to the Olympics your government announced it was lifting the ban on reporting in Tibet, yet in reality foreign journalists are still barred from most Tibetan areas. Furthermore, disturbing and ongoing reports from Tibet of attacks on Tibet's major monasteries, extrajudicial detentions, beatings and death demand that international observers be allowed into Tibet's prisons and detention centers.

In this post-Olympics period, your actions inside Tibet will impact China's standing in the international community. The occupation of Tibet will continue to be a stain on China's international reputation, as it was during the Olympics, if immediate steps are not taken to restore the Tibetan people's basic human rights and freedom.

Sincerely,

Background Information

Tibetans are in the midst of the most intense crackdown by Chinese authorities in decades. Tibet has been under military lockdown since March, when peaceful protests by Tibetan monks sparked a national uprising across Tibet in opposition to China's occupation. Over one thousand monks from Tibet's major monasteries remain missing and Tibetans continue to be shot in the street for peaceful protests. While Tibet is in theory open to foreign visitors and journalists, in practice, most journalists continued to be barred from Tibetan areas.

The historic protests in Beijing, in Tibet, and around the world this Olympic year have shown that Tibet is one of the critical issues facing China's current and future leaders. To learn more, visit: www.freetibet2008.org
