Just before Thanksgiving Starbucks workers in 111 stores across 25 states went on strike to launch #RedCupRebellion to Stand up to Starbucks' bullying and demand they treat workers and communities right. The strikes coincided with Starbucks’ Red Cup Day, a corporate promotional day that is notorious among Starbucks workers as one of the busiest days of the year. So instead of serving up Starbucks’ cups, they walked out in their first nationally coordinated strike and handed out their own Starbucks Workers United holiday cups to strike supporters.
Rather than meeting workers at the bargaining table, Starbucks has fired over 125 workers who are participating in unionization efforts and closing stores where unions are building. Workers have been waiting more than 6 months, and in some cases more than a year to bargain. There are over 250 unionized Starbucks locations, and yet Starbucks has only met with a small handful, and has walked out of several negotiations. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has issued 39 official Complaints against Starbucks and interim CEO Howard Schultz, including more than 900 allegations of employer misconduct.
As Starbucks not only busts unions, but targets LGBTQ+ workers, breaks its climate promises, and enjoys massive windfall profits as the rest of us pinch pennies in response to inflation, this is a critical moment for us to join together. On Friday, December 9, the one year anniversary of the first union win of the campaign at a Starbucks in Buffalo, NY, workers and allies will rally from coast to coast. Join us to show Starbucks that we stand up to bullies, and we see through their phony progressive reputation.
