50.5% of New Yorkers - almost 10 million people - are poor or low-income. Our state government must be judged by its impact on the majority of New York’s residents who are poor and dispossessed — especially people of color, LGBTQIA+, immigrants, women, and children who are disproportionately impacted. The budget proposals currently being debated in Albany don’t come close to addressing the crises our communities are facing. Instead they would continue the status-quo - refusing to capture any additional wealth from the rich or make investments in healthcare, housing, education, jobs, or clean energy at the scale we need.
On March 18, the New York Poor People’s Campaign will take action across the state, showing that the poor, activists, and faith leaders of all races and in all regions are united in demanding our state government change course and prioritize ending systemic racism, poverty, militarism and ecological devastation.
