The Amazon is again in flames. Forest destruction there is up nearly 50% from last year – and is at its most rapid pace in over a decade. The lungs of the planet are being crushed by the pursuit of endless growth.
The fires in the Amazon are not an act of nature. They are being set deliberately by businesses eager to make a quick profit. Multinational corporations like Cargill and JBS are supplying meat and grains to every region of the world – and destroying the Amazon in the process.
This environmental degradation is ultimately made possible by retailers. Grocery stores have the power to stop sourcing meat from companies engaged in forest destruction. And yet they’ve been unwilling to take action.
That’s why we’re calling on grocers to take leadership and cut ties to forest-killing meat companies like Cargill and JBS. We are especially focusing on Costco, Casino grocery stores, and stores owned by Ahold Delhaize (such as Stop & Shop in the US and Albert Heijn in the Netherlands). These grocery stores frequently brag about the positive environmental impact they are having. Yet by selling meat from forest destroyers, they are putting our planet in peril. They can’t have it both ways. Join us on July 29 as we take action and fight for sweeping changes from our retailers.
Here is what we're asking you to do:
1. Go to your local retailer (again, we especially encourage going to Costco or a store owned by Ahold)
2. Hold up a sign that calls on them to cut ties with companies engaged in deforestation like Cargill or JBS.
3. Post a photo of your action (and set it to public) and tag @standmighty and the store you're at. Also, please send photos to michael@mightyearth.org
In addition, you can consider: putting flyers on every windshield in the parking lot; talking to the customer service desk; or leaving a comment in the comment box.
