Jane Doe is an undocumented minor being held in detention by immigration officials. Per Texas’ onerous laws, Jane plead to a judge for permission to seek abortion care; she had to raise her own money for her abortion. She did all this – she got the money, she saw the judge. But immigration officials wouldn’t let her leave detention for the abortion she needed. The Trump Administration fought for months in court to delay her abortion and force her to give birth, until finally, a judge ruled to allow the abortion to go forward.

Jane got her abortion. But the Trump administration wouldn’t stop, and hasn’t stopped, attacking young women like her. At the highest level, officials continue to deny undocumented minors in detention the abortion care they ask for, and make malicious threats, including threatening to tell abusive family members about these young women’s pregnancies.

The Trump Administration and this Congress will stop at nothing in its abuses of power and its attacks on already marginalized groups – young people, Muslims, immigrants, and LGBT people. And their attacks on reproductive rights and justice have been ceaseless.

The fight for abortion access cannot be separated from the fight to ensure the safety and freedom of marginalized communities. Young people are leading a movement forward – and they’re bringing everyone along.

That’s why this year’s 1 in 3 Abortion Speakout is dedicated to Jane Doe.

The 1 in 3 Campaign’s annual livestreamed abortion Speakout is one of our most important events. We are honored to spend an entire day highlighting the stories of real people – people who are under threat in the current political climate. People who are committed to justice, equity, and the fight for liberation.

The 2017 Speakout will also occur simultaneously with the 1 in 3 day on Capitol Hill, where abortion storytellers will share their stories with Congress. These legislators must hear from real people as they make decisions that impact all our lives.
