ABOUT THE BOOK

Equality is easy to grasp in theory but often hard to achieve in reality. In Practical Equality, Robert L. Tsai, professor of law at American University, explores the pursuit of equality throughout American history, from the Civil War and internment of Japanese Americans during World War II up to present day. With his historical lens, Tsai eschews indirect methods for achieving equality—such as promoting fair play and protecting free speech—while offering practical models to tackle contemporary injustices such as voter suppression and police brutality. Based in legal analysis but accessible to all readers, Practical Equality offers a fresh viewpoint on defeating inequality in American life.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Robert L. Tsai is professor of law at American University. In the fall, he will hold the Clifford Scott Green chair and serve as a visiting professor at Temple University School of Law. Tsai is the author of three books, Practical Equality: Forging Justice in a Divided Nation (W. W. Norton 2019), America’s Forgotten Constitutions: Defiant Visions of Power and Community (Harvard 2014), and Eloquence and Reason: Creating a First Amendment Culture (Yale 2008), and his essays have appeared in The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Review of Books, Politico, Boston Review and Slate.
