The pay gap is one of the most visible challenges Latinas face in the workplace, and it goes beyond low-wage workers, affecting Latinas at all levels. This Latina Equal Pay Day, we go “beyond the pay gap” and examine the various inequalities both in and out of the workplace that contribute to the pay gap. These include insufficient access to benefits like healthcare, paid leave, affordable and accessible child care, and the lack of workplace protections for the most vulnerable. Other workplace challenges that can impact pay and quality of life include sexual harassment and unaccountable employers. As trade unionists and activists, we ask ourselves what role our unions play in closing the pay gap and what collective actions we can take towards achieving this goal.
