This is a virtual event

Feb 4th in New Zealand, the TPP will be signed by ministers of 12 Pacific Rim Countries, but we can and must stop this deal right here in the U.S. Congress.

Many would agree that the investment chapters in TPP / TTIP / NAFTA are the biggest reasons why these deals must be stopped, because they legally encourage corporations invested in fossil fuel development to continue drilling, fracking, and piping filthy tar sands. The great cynical letdown by a president indebted to corporate America was that Obama rejected the Keystone XL Pipeline, with great environmentalist fanfare, the day after he announced to Congress, his intention to sign the TPP.

Two months later, on January 6th, Trans Canada announced that it will sue the U.S. under NAFTA’s Chapter 11 Investor State Dispute Chapter for $15Billion for shutting down the KXL Pipeline.  Now, as the U.S. must defend itself from an ISDS suit that Obama said couldn’t happen to the U.S., we must work very hard to make sure Congress votes NO on the TPP to prevent further attacks on environmental safeguards.

All irony aside, why should a foreign corporation like TransCanada be given the legal tools under ISDS to sue the U.S. or any country over public interest laws and regulations, simply because they are perceived to be barriers to profit?  And why should foreign investors take precedence over fracking bans already in place in the U.S.? Our special guests on this Sunday’s TPP Team Call are very qualified to answer these burning questions.

Please Welcome Bill McKibben, a founder of 350.org, the first planet-wide, grassroots climate change movement, who also spearheaded the resistance to the Keystone Pipeline, and launched the fast-growing fossil fuel divestment movement.

Also joining us is Ilana Solomon, Director of the Sierra Club’s Responsible Trade Program, and outspoken critic of TPP / TTIP and their implications on people and the planet.

Also, joining us will be Dr. Margaret Flowers, Popular Resistance, flushthetpp.org to discuss the Feb 4th TPP is Betrayal Days of Action;

Nancy Price, with the Alliance for Democracy, will update us on the TPP Free Zones Campaign, and how to incorporate the call for democracy into our Feb 4th events;

Emilianne Slaydon, TPP Media March, will discuss this week’s Twitter Storm;

Andrea Miller, Executive Director, People Demanding Action, will moderate the call.

Please join us,

Harriet Heywood
