Book Panel - Metastasis: The Rise of the Cancer-Industrial Complex and the Horizons of Care w/ Author Nafis Hasan at Woodbine
Start: Sunday, March 02, 2025•04:00 PM
More than fifty years after the declaration of the War on Cancer, and billions of dollars spent, we are still nowhere close to declaring victory. In the meantime, a profiteering ecosystem of private, nonprofit and public actors have emerged in the form of the “cancer-industrial complex” that has shaped the narrative of cancer as a disease and a social phenomenon. How do we understand this particular complex, and by extension, “cancer capitalism”?
Join us on Sunday, March 2, for a panel discussion on the political economy of cancer research and treatment, and what alternatives exist or need to be built in order to confront the cancer-industrial complex. The event will feature a discussion between Nafis Hasan, author of Metastasis: The Rise of the Cancer-Industrial Complex and the Horizons of Care (Common Notions, Feb 2025) and DSA member, Josh Kraushar, a cancer survivor and organizer with NYC DSA, and Agrima Dutt, a member of the radical science organization Science for the People - NYC chapter. The discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A. Copies of Metastasis will be available for sale.
