Charlotte’s construction industry is booming, but a study published last month revealed its dark side - unsafe and precarious work, low wages and wage theft, a lack of access to benefits and workers’ compensation, and the exploitation of unskilled and immigrant labor. Fairly compensated and highly trained unionized building trades people in our community point to the high road not taken, but there are concrete steps City Council can take to get there.
